A modern two-tone kitchen featuring dark blue base cabinets with light wood countertops, and white upper cabinets. The kitchen has a white marble backsplash and gold/brass accents on the hardware, faucet, and ceiling trim. Under-cabinet lighting illuminates the workspace, and copper utensils hang above the counter. A kitchen island with light wood chairs and a table is in the foreground.

How We Paint Elements

A kitchen under construction, showing newly installed but unfinished light wood cabinet frames. The upper cabinets are open-front with interior shelf peg holes and topped with white crown molding. Below, bare wood base cabinet frames include a designated sink area, extending to a tall, white open pantry or refrigerator surround on the right. The walls are primed white, with visible electrical outlets and some exposed drywall. A pipe clamp rests on the unfinished counter area, and a yellow power tool is on the subfloor.

STEP 1. Preparation

We taking off all doors and removing hardware. Cleaning off dirt, grease and other deposits. Covering all surfaces and the floor with protective coatings.

A stack of unfinished light wood cabinet doors and various decorative trim pieces leaning against a wall, likely materials for a home renovation or construction project.

STEP 2. Repair and Sanding

We take off the old paint, varnish. We lightly or deeply sand the surface to smooth it and to increase the adhesion of the paint.

Several freshly painted sage green cabinet doors and drawer fronts are laid out horizontally on a protective surface, likely drying. Each piece features a recessed panel design and small holes for hardware.

STEP 3. Prime and Paint

We apply 1 to 3 coats of primer and 2 to 3 coats of paint, so that the surface is evenly colored and resistant to mechanical damage. Light sanding may be performed between coats to give the surface a perfect smoothness.

A close-up shows hands installing a new cabinet handle. One hand positions a brushed metal handle on a white cabinet door, while the other hand uses a screwdriver to tighten it. White cabinets and a subway tile backsplash are in the background.

STEP 4. Assembling & Clean Up

Assemble cabinets with new hardware to bring a fresh new look. Remove protective coatings and clean the space.
