Which scope level fits your remodel? A guide to comparing bids on one job

Most remodel bids can't be compared because each contractor priced a different job. This guide matches four scope levels to project types so every bid starts from one scope.
You ask three contractors to bid on your kitchen. One prices new cabinets. One assumes you keep the old ones. The third leaves out the permit and the electrical work. The totals come back far apart, and you can’t tell whether you’re looking at a bargain, a gap or a mistake.
That is why most remodel bids can’t be compared. Each contractor priced a different job. The fix is to start with one written home renovation scope of work that every contractor bids on. Then the bids line up apples to apples, and the differences you see are real differences in price, schedule and approach.
This guide shows how Parrotones does that. A Renovation Specialist writes the scope, vetted contractors bid on it, and you choose where to start by recognizing your own project among four scope levels.

1. WHY BIDS DON’T COMPARE

A verbal walkthrough and a one-page estimate leave a lot open. Who removes the old flooring? Which fixtures are included? Is drywall repair part of the price? Every contractor fills those gaps differently, usually in the way that makes their own number look reasonable.
A written scope closes the gaps before anyone prices anything. It lists the rooms, the existing conditions, the materials and the work, line by line. Contractors then bid on that same document. When you compare contractor bids, you compare the contractors and not their assumptions.
Parrotones is not a contractor directory or a lead service. We work in the stage before construction, when a remodel is really decided. You host one expert visit instead of a parade of estimators, and the Specialist presents the bids exactly as they were submitted.

2. QUICK SELF-CHECK: WHICH PROJECT IS YOURS?

Read these four descriptions and see which one sounds like you.
I have a compact, fairly straightforward project, and I want a fast, low-commitment start. That points to Virtual Estimate.
I’m planning a typical residential remodel, such as a kitchen, a bathroom or a few rooms, up to about $50k. That points to On-Site Scope.
My project is over $50k, and I expect permits to matter. That points to On-Site Scope Plus.
I’m building an ADU, remodeling the whole home, or renovating a commercial space. That points to Complex Scope.
No level is better than another. Each one fits a type of project, and the right one is the one that matches yours.

3. THE FOUR SCOPE LEVELS

Virtual Estimate, $199
What the Specialist does: reviews the photos and video of your space and assesses the project remotely. From that material the Specialist drafts the scope of work.
What you receive: an assessment based on your photos and video, one written scope, and bids from vetted contractors on that same scope.
Who it suits: compact, straightforward projects, and homeowners who want a quick, low-commitment way to see how the process works. Clear photos and video matter here, because the Specialist works only from what you send.

On-Site Scope, $499

What the Specialist does: visits the property, takes measurements and photographs, and talks through your goals and constraints. Then the Specialist writes a detailed scope of work and prepares a side-by-side comparison of the bids.
What you receive: the written scope, bids from vetted contractors on that same scope, the comparison, and a walkthrough call to explain the differences before you decide. It is recommended for projects up to $50k.
Who it suits: most typical residential remodels. If you can picture the work in one or a few rooms and want someone to measure, look and write it down properly, this is the level that fits.

On-Site Scope Plus, $899

What the Specialist does: makes an extended visit and goes deeper into the scope. Larger projects have more moving parts, so the Specialist also does a permit pre-check.
What you receive: the deeper written scope, bids from vetted contractors on that same scope, the side-by-side comparison, and two walkthrough calls.
Who it suits: projects over $50k, where more of the work has to be defined before bidding and where permits are likely to shape the plan.

Complex Scope, $1,299

What the Specialist does: scopes ADUs, full-home remodels and commercial spaces. This level includes a feasibility and zoning review. The Specialist looks at whether the project can work on that property, and what zoning means for it, before contractors price it. It is a pre-construction review. It is not a permit approval.
What you receive: one written scope for the whole job and bids from vetted contractors on that same scope. Commercial work is common here. Store, restaurant, office and clinic owners usually fit this level, as do landlords and property managers with larger jobs.
Who it suits: anyone whose first question is not “what will it cost” but “what can I build, and how should it be defined?”

4. WHAT EVERY LEVEL ENDS WITH

Whichever level you pick, you finish with the same two things: one written scope, and bids from vetted contractors on that same scope. The Specialist walks you through a side-by-side comparison, and the bids are shown exactly as submitted. Nothing is reworded or polished.
Every level also carries one promise: “3 Bids in 7 Days, or your scoping fee back.” It covers the scoping fee, not the remodel. If it applies, the Specialist settles the refund in the app. It is not instant or automatic.
To be clear about what we don’t claim: we don’t promise a lower price. We promise that the prices you receive describe the same job, so you can judge them fairly.

AFTER YOU HIRE: RENOVATION HUB

A clear scope helps most before the work starts, but the same transparency should continue during the build. That is what Renovation Hub, the Parrotones app for mobile and web, is for.
The contract is signed in the app. The crew shares daily progress reports. Each payment stage opens only after the matching work is documented and accepted. Change orders, documents, photos and conversations stay in one shared project that you, the crew and the Specialist can all see. When the job is done, the records stay with the property.
